25 years old, raised by a single parent, and with only one SPM credit.
Coming from her challenging background, Logeswarey Ganasen once found herself faced with limited career options and an uncertain future. Fast forward to today, and she is working a stable job at ‘LunchBox’, a small restaurant at Sunway Residences serving Asian and Western cuisine. Through training and support provided by MySkills Foundation, Logeswarey learned to bake and gained the necessary skills for work in a variety of cafes and restaurants. They say education is the best tool to bring positive change in society. Led by Pasupathi Sithamparam, MySkills came about in 2011 to help underachievers and school dropouts build a better future, with particular focus on the Malaysian Indian community. Based on research, 70% of 10,000 school dropouts every year are from this community. That’s a staggering number. “MySkills Foundation is a centre where troubled youth are accepted for a transformation experience that changes their attitude as well as enhance their skills particularly on the Emotional Intelligence aspect,” Pasupathi, Director of MySkills Foundation, shares. In supporting MySkills’ efforts, De’Devine Café is a social enterprise set up as a training ground for underprivileged youngsters and high school dropouts. This is where they learn, hands-on, the skills needed to work in the F&B industry. Whether it is in the kitchen, as part of the service crew, or beyond, MySkills is extremely proud to have had over 638 graduates now following a new, successful path. Hearing from the centre’s participants, seeing fellow students thrive and become more capable have also influenced others to do even better. With hopes of seeing even more of our youth leave their lives of poverty behind, MySkills is taking active steps to raise awareness amongst the general public. At the end of the day, everyone, young or old, plays a vital role in contributing to a safer, wiser, and better Malaysia.
