NURTURING TOMORROW’S LEADERS
Yayasan Khazanah (YK) was established in 2006 to develop and groom the next generation of leaders for our nation. YK sources for scholars with exceptional academic achievements and leadership traits.
The foundation’s flagship programme, the Khazanah Global Scholarship, provides scholars the opportunity to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate programmes at selected premier universities in the United Kingdom, United States and Australia. The scholarship programme includes the Khazanah-Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies Merdeka Scholarship for postgraduate studies at Oxford University and the Khazanah-Cambridge Scholarship for students pursuing undergraduate or postgraduate studies at Cambridge University.
In addition to the Global Scholarship programme, YK has three local scholarships namely, the Khazanah Watan Scholarship, Khazanah Asia Scholarship and Khazanah Bestari Scholarship.
Since its inception in 2006 and until the end of 2013, YK has awarded a total of 357 scholarships to deserving students. In 2013, a total of 74 scholarships were awarded. To date, 116 scholars have graduated and are starting to contribute in a variety of capacities and roles. Most returning scholars under the Khazanah Global and Khazanah Watan scholarships have been absorbed into Khazanah, Khazanah-linked companies or the GLCs; or are currently pursuing postgraduate qualifications.
In 2013, YK collaborated with the International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF) to establish a new scholarship called the Khazanah-INCEIF Scholarship. This scholarship aims to provide educational opportunities for top Malaysian students to pursue postgraduate studies in Islamic finance in INCEIF. YK also extended its Khazanah Asia Scholarship awards to Palestinian scholars.
An integral feature of YK Scholarship Programme is the broad range of training and developmental activities that scholars undergo to prepare them for a successful and accelerated leadership pathway. These include formal training sessions under the YKLP, business exposure via internships or short assignments in relevant organisations, as well as voluntary work with non-profit organisations. In 2013, YK launched the YK Mentoring Programme where Khazanah Global scholars are assigned to senior leadership team members from Khazanah to be mentored by them.
YK will continue in its quest for excellence and ensure the application of best practices in its operations. In line with this goal, YK conducted a holistic review of its existing strategies and practices with the aim of formulating the future direction of YK over the next five years. The resulting blueprint, YK 2.0, will see transformation and improvements taking place in several areas. The Foundation will continue to promote its scholarship programmes to potential scholars via its outreach programme in order to achieve its mandate of creating tomorrow’s leaders for the nation today.
