Celebrating World Environment Day 2025: A Greener Future Starts Now at Taman Tugu

The Yayasan Hasanah team at Taman Tugu

5 June 2025: Yayasan Hasanah and Taman Tugu co-organised a vibrant, action-packed celebration in honour of World Environment Day — bringing together Malaysians from all walks of life to connect with nature and champion sustainability.

Held at the lush, urban forest of Taman Tugu, this community event was rooted in the spirit of collaboration and environmental stewardship. Taman Tugu is a not-for-profit corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative led by Khazanah Nasional Berhad (Khazanah), aimed at conserving green spaces and making them accessible for all.

Plastic Pollution: A Shared Responsibility

The day began with a powerful message from Puan Siti Kamariah Ahmad Subki, Trustee and Managing Director of Yayasan Hasanah:

“Plastic pollution is a growing concern that affects all of us — from our natural ecosystems to the food we eat, and increasingly, our own health. Addressing this challenge requires more than policy solutions; it calls for a shift in everyday habits and greater public awareness. At Yayasan Hasanah, we are honoured to partner with Taman Tugu in encouraging community-level actions that promote sustainable living and protect our shared environment.”

Her remarks highlighted the importance of long-term behavioural change, supported by community engagement and partnerships.

Small Actions, Big Impact

Echoing this year’s global theme, Beat Plastic Pollution, Dato’ Mohamed Nasri Sallehuddin, Chairman of Taman Tugu Development Sdn Bhd, reinforced the importance of everyday choices:

“‘Beat Plastic Pollution’ is a timely call for each of us to take action. Small, consistent choices like bringing your own container can make a big difference.”

Hasanah Adopts a Tree: Protecting Biodiversity, One Species at a Time

As a symbolic gesture of its ongoing environmental commitment, Yayasan Hasanah adopted a Penarahan tree at Taman Tugu.

Trustee & Managing Director of Yayasan Hasanah, Puan Siti Kamariah Ahmad Subki with Yayasan Hasanah’s adopted tree – the Penarahan tree – at Taman Tugu.

This native species — known for its oily seeds traditionally used to make balm and fuel — is now increasingly rare due to logging and land conversion. Protecting trees like the Penarahan not only safeguards biodiversity, but also honours the deep-rooted knowledge of Malaysia’s indigenous communities.

A Day of Nature, Learning, and Community

The celebration featured a wide range of engaging and family-friendly activities:

  • Plastic bag origami
  • Batik painting sessions
  • Composting workshops
  • Zumba Rimba dance sessions
  • Plant giveaways

These hands-on experiences empowered attendees to learn practical steps toward reducing waste and embracing eco-friendly lifestyles.

A Celebration of Collective Impact

This event would not have been possible without the contributions of our amazing partners. A heartfelt thank you to:
Amanah Lestari Alam (ALAM), Hara Makers, Free Tree Society, PERSENIBAH, Roots & Shoots Malaysia, Gerai OA, Marecet, Pulihara, Fuze Ecoteer, WWF-Malaysia, and many more who brought passion and purpose to the day.
